Jeff Crouse
As part of British Airways' co-location with American Airlines in the newly expanded Terminal 8 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Gensler was tasked with designing the new check-in and lounge experiences. The result includes two new lounges — Chelsea and Soho — each offering streamlined concierge-style check-in areas and inviting guests to "choose their own adventure" in how they drink, dine, relax, and work.
These premium spaces are highlighted by custom design elements that enhance the overall experience. In the Chelsea lounge, guests are greeted by an exclusive champagne bar, a fireside lounge, and à la carte dining. The Soho lounge features a vibrant cocktail bar, a secluded library, a communal wine pouring table, and airside views.
I contributed to this project by designing custom digital panels that display dynamic content of natural biomes, acting as living wallpaper to create a calming ambiance for guests. Given the lounge's limited windows, incorporating digital wallpapers with a real connection to nature was a natural choice. The digital content is refreshed seasonally, thanks to a dynamic engine we developed using Unreal Engine and the extensive Quixel library. This setup allows us to generate an almost infinite number of unique videos, each reflecting different times of day and seasons throughout the year. The videos feature four distinct biomes, each with its own set of plants and compositions, ensuring the experience remains fresh and engaging for frequent travelers. This dynamic visual element contributes to the overall atmosphere of the lounges, making each visit unique and memorable.

The Concept
The main direction was rooted in the idea that nature is full of mystique and phenomenas that reminds us that things are not always what they seem. By Putting elements and objects in different vantage points can reveal multitudes of perspectives and variations depending on what light you're seeing it in.
In this direction, we would take full advantage of volumetric light and shadows, depth of field and visual effects, to create intrigue and mystique around objects found in nature. Slow paced and drifting perspectives would create movement and drama in our visualizations, drawing spectators in to discover and absorb scenes of nature that slowly reveal themselves.

How it works
The concept was driven by a custom video rig in Unreal engine. We chose Unreal due to the integration of a huge amount of assets from Quixel, The unreal setup was constructed to create perfectly set up scenes using a predefined set of plants, but randomly assemble the composition along some basic rules and guidelines.

Test Output
Through our engine, we started to get some really beautiful and cinematic outputs, with incredible resolution and detail. By combining Vegetation and plants from different biomes and collections, with different types of atmospheric lighting and other effects, the realism in our visuals were off the charts.

Final Output & Biomes
Our final output ended up as a huge collection of video files, played on brightsign players in the space. Because of the requirement for stability, the opportunity to use a real time rendering solution was not fessable. Nevertheless, our final collection of videos contained a huge amount of variety and content made possible by the Unreal Engine setup.
